Ah yes. there’s nothing like a good trip down to the flea market after work, on a gorgeous Wednesday morn. Yesterday, as in fact a really brilliant visit. I didn’t expect much, to be honest, and after walking around the town centre for a bit, I headed off to see what “delights” would be sold.
I arrived, and felt a shudder. It was if the place hadn’t changed a bit. the first two stalls, all completely crammed full of worthless tat. Luckily, I managed to ignore them, and proceeded to the “heart” of the market. Oooo. There were some stalls I’d not seen before. The first stall mainly sold stationery, but I noticed a box of CD’s.
“Tha’ five for a poond, youngun” the guy bellowed at me as I thumbed my way through the worst collection of CD’s I’ve ever had the misfortune to look at. Eventually, after going through the collection a number of times, I picked five, including the long-saught after Dario G remix of Sash’s “Colour The World”. And all it cost me was a shiny golden coin. Hurrah, eh?
I walked around for a bit, and found another new stall. Cor. Two in one visit. this store was more of your “General shite” stores, piled full of old clothes. Still, my eagle-eye for a musical bargain spotted a box of old 7″ singles nestled in the corner.
I begin thumbing through them. “Are they alreet?” said the guy on the stall. Apparently, speaking in broad Geordie must be a prequisite to selling there.
“Yeah, some of them are OK”, I say, as I flick past some Black Lace singles.
“Ye ken ‘ave the box full fe’…. whaddya reckon… three fifty?”, he replies, clearly expecting me to haggle. But I didn’t.
“Aye, OK then.” I take the box and its afore mentioned plasticky goodness, knowing that I was now the owner of an original copy of “Agadoo” and “Do the Conga”. Hurrah!
The goodness didn’t stop there. I continue to walk around to the GOOD section, if there is such a thing. It’s the strip between the Corner House, and the Stagecoach office. Normally, these are all CDs and DVDs, and each week, they tend to have different stock, which means there’s always at least one CD worth buying.
Today was no exception. I found a classic, which I didn’t even know existed. The “Due South” soundtrack CD! I used to like Due South when it was on telly. I believe it’s being repeated on some obscure channel (ITV Twelveteen, or something), but I especially liked the theme. I knew it was sung by someone called Jay Semko, as I had an MP3 of it a while back, but I never expected to be able to buy it on CD. But, I did!
I also got some replacements of cheap albums I already had (the Greatest hits of Lightning Seeds being one of them - my copy is 8 years old and scratched to fuckwittery), and finally, yet more CD singles. I return home, with my arms full of music. Hurrah!
I then spend the rest of the day sitting in the back garden, drinking many cans of Fosters (yes, this is at about 11AM in the morning. Blame the nightshift), and pricking about with the camera (pictures later).
I went to bed at about 2PM, sunburned and merry.
Today isn’t looking as nice. It’s foggy and freezing outside. Not that it matters, as I currently have a great big blanket up at my window blocking the awful, awful daylight.
