This blog has been following the ups and downs of my life since November 4th 2000. Amazingly, it's still going.

Bungle’s broken the 90-day barrier…

Yes, the machine that hosted you with this very web page has been up for…..

up 91 days, 11:26, load average: 0.08, 0.23, 0.14

This is the first officially recorded 90-day+ uptime of any machine I have. I’m so happy. The bastard knows about it though. The completely dead PSU fan kicks into life occiasionally. Only ever while I’m asleep. Or trying to get to sleep.

I’ve broken my personal best. I’m the man.

Dead DVD writer

The DVD writer in Beastbits has finally died. At least I assume it’s died. And when things go wrong like this, the best cure I’ve found is to throw a credit card at it.

DVD writers have dropped in price considerably, since I bought that one in 2003. It paid for itself when my original 120Gb HDD almost gave up the ghost. Can’t think of a thing I lost, thanks to that.

Either way, I’ll be going for a retail model, in the hope of getting some decent writing software. Decent, in the sense it’s something other than crap like Nero Express.

The overheating situation with Beastbits is still there. 2.2Ghz worth of machine, and I can hardly use it. The fan/heatsink looks chock full of dust, so when I remember, I’ll blast it with some compressed air. If it still crashes, THEN I’ll replace the heatsink.

Thankfully, everything else this year has been stable, touchwood. Bungle needs a reboot, and an fsck. Getting “Disk Full” messages, when it’s not even close to full. Loving his uptime though…

Running a texpire on the news server ATM.

Running a texpire on the news server ATM. It’s already purged 5Gb’s worth of data, with more to come :)

I’ll probably be backing up the web server overnight before I decide what to do with it. I’m not doing much with it ATM, but the webcam archives are gulping my bandwidth.

Also did a mail clear-out. Forwarded ~30Mb’s of crap to my gmail account.

Beastbits Backup

Backup of Beastbits completed again, wooo! About 110 Gb this time. There’s been a load more video stuff done recently.

All of the abandoned video projects have been moved onto an old 40Gb drive. They were taking up far too much space.

Bungle’s also had a tidy-up. All of the old shit has been ditched, that’s being written to DVD as I type.

SOme other, older stuff was removed and placed onto DVD. Might defrag the drive tonight too…

Free space on Beastbits is now about 75Gb. And, as for Bungle…

My love affair with Linux is over.

My love affair with Linux is over.

It died rather spectacularly at 2AM this morning. Can I be arsed to mop up the damage? Can I feck.

Rod is cleaned of important files, and is all set for converting to a Win2000 box. Bungle’s fate is, as yet, undecided. If the Win2000 conversion goes ahead, he’ll be scrapped, or converted into a new webcam box to replace the skinny, dying Geoffrey.

If it doesn’t go ahead, I’ll bung linux back on it. But, at the minute, I’ve got two useless machines and a dad that’s whinging that he can’t get back on the internet. I CAN’T BE BOTHERED ANY MORE.
