This blog has been following the ups and downs of my life since November 4th 2000. Amazingly, it's still going.

Backup

Woo! Norton Ghost has arrived, to a flurry of excitement. Or rather to a flurry of “What the hell have I paid £5 shipping for? A crushed box, wrapped up in paper?”

Either way, it plopped flatly onto my doormat this morning, I rushed to install it and… WHY OH WHY DOES IT NOT WORK?

Well, I say it doesn’t work. It’s backed up Beastbits’ C drive to another hard drive, but that really is all it’s done. I bought it so it can back up to DVD, but no luck yet….

I’ll let you know how I get on. Bet you can’t wait.

Bah.

Doesn’t look like the Maxtor drive I’ve been using for backups wants to format any more. Not a good sign. But, I’ve just noticed, it’s only 120Gb and not 160Gb as I enthusiastically posted. So, there’s another reason to scrap it entirely.

going to try and get it to format using the diving “SysRecCD”, but I’m not holding out much hope. Oh well.

And, seeing as I forgot to mention it before, just got my first piece of comment spam! Hurrah! I feel so… loved! St0cks for your profile, indeed. Nobody ever reads this, and I’m damn sure they’re going to follow anything from here.

Oh my god.

Just checked the old backup of Beastbits. It was completely, and utterly, 100% invalid.

For whatever reason, the last backup had gone completely tits up, to the point where Windows could see the backup drive, it could see there was 24Gb left on it. But could it see the 100Gb of data on there? Of course it couldn’t, orther wise I wouldn’t have started off with “Oh my god.” A scandisk of the drive belched up system errors, and even after they were corrected, Windows could still see nothing.

So, *gulp*. I’m formatting the drive, and going to do one last backup of it. A backup which I will no longer trust with any type of certainty at all.

Instead, I’m going to buy a proper external HDD and some type of backup software.

Not dead

This blog isn’t dead. It’s just that everything is working smoothly… orking smoothly… orking smoothly… orking sm[crackle, fizz]

Something that did get my goat was the fact that Nero doesn’t want to backup anymore… I wrote this about 2 weeks ago, but didn’t publish it…

Grrrr. Beastbits is no longer wanting to play when it comes to backing up using Nero BackItUp. Shit shit shit.

I’m getting the error message “The File System of selected partition cannot be recognised. The system cannot be backed up using compression”. So, it expects me to back up a 75% empty partition onto DVD, at approx. half an hour per disk.

It still does this, but I’m going to cut my losses, get an external HDD and Norton Ghost or something. There’s not been a backup for ages, and that worries me.

Sometimes I wish, I really wish that somebody actually reads this blog.

I feel so…. so…. fulfilled.

You may, or more likely, may not have noticed the post below about replacing the HDD in Beastbits. One of the problems that stood out for me after doing that, was resizing the NTFS partition. Cleverly, when I set the machine up almost exactly a year ago, I’d thought nothing of creating a tiny system partition (5Gb on a 60Gb drive). As my system got used, and more (sigh) Win XP updates got thrown at me, that 5Gb soon became a pair of 36″ plastic trousers on my 46″ gut of MIGHT. There simply wasn’t enough room.

Now, in the last post, I mentioned backing up the old 60Gb HDD, seeing as it sounded like it was about to be sick. The Nero DVD I’d created actually included a basic partition manager. That way, I was able to remove the old partitons on the 120Gb drive that replaced it, but not actually resize it. So, once again, I’d be stuck with a 5Gb partition on a 120Gb drive. There had to be SOME way of resizing the partition in Windows.

Unsurprisingly, there wasn’t. Gah.

Yet, I wasn’t defeated. I fired up google. There had to be something. And there was. And it came, also unsurprisingly in the form of Linux.

You see, Linux is just the fountain of everything good in the whole history of things better than…. stuff. Seriously. It’s not for your Aunt Mabel, but if you know what you’re doing, it’s better than teh secx.

I digress… I downloaded an ISO from www.sysreccd.org and was able to use QtParted to resize the NTFS partition from 5Gb to 30Gb. Woohoo!

So, I now have a reasonably sensible system drive to work with! Now, let’s toss a coin to see if I can be bothered to install SP2…. :)
