It’s been another profitable few days on the old music front. Wednesday was flea market day, which naturally, I attended. Wild horses wouldn’t keep me away. Oh, well, OK that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but as you all know, I do like a good browse.
I had only attended this time in the vain hope that Eric, one one the long-time sellers had returned this week. He was there last week selling Cds for 50p each. You may remember me mentioning that. Now, this, obviously was an awesome price, and although I went away with an armful, there were a few I’d wished I’d purchased, but for whatever reason, didn’t.
The market itself was absolutely abysmal, and disappointingly, Eric was probably still tucked up in bed, as he certainly wasn’t there. Bugger.
Anyway, there’s one stall that’s been there the last few times, who do sell records, albeit singles, and plenty of them, for 50p each, or 3 for £1. I went away with £4 worth, containing such delights as Lionel Richie’s painful classic “Hello”, which I admittedly only bought for the instrumental version of “All Night Long” on the B side. No, really.
So, there I was, sat in work the other night. We got discussing the subject of my recent vinyl purchases. Ian, who has worked at our place for approximately 6 months, was on night shifts with me and JT. He seemed rather surprised that I still had an interest in vinyl, and said he bring in some records that he had tried to sell on ebay, but failed, and couldn’t be arsed looking at them any more.
I was delighted, and claimed I would be happy to take these off his hands. Sure enough, true to his word, he bought in a pile of records. I was happy to see classics in there such as The Bee Gees, Billy Joel, and hell, even some Showaddywaddy in there.
It suddenly struck me, that I, really do, have a terrible taste in music. My vinyl interest has pretty much stopped my music progression dead in its tracks. I happened to be in the taxi on the way home from work today, and the driver happened to be listening to Radio 1. It suddenly struck me that I know none of the bands that were playing. None of the songs. Nothing sounded familiar.
It was then I came up with the following plan. For the next year, I’m going to review every album that makes it to the Number 1 spot on the charts in the next year. See below for what I’m going to do…
This will have many benefits. The first is, it’ll give me some actual subject matter to type about, instead of the garbage I’ve been sprouting in the past few months. Secondly, it might increase the hits to this site. It’s a while since I’ve had a bit of a flap about my blog stats, but they’re dwindling rapidly. I think everyone’s had enough. OK, part of that is because I’ve concentrated on helping Andrew Dorrian get his gallery up and working on the site (almost 4,000 images is a lot to sift through) and most of my time (and traffic) now goes there. Some of my most popular posts on here are ones where I’ve reviewed those theme CDs
Lastly, it’ll “spread my horizons” music wise. And who knows? I might actually end up listening to some of them more than once! The downsides are that I’ll have to play for the CDs myself. I’ll also get comments from 12-yr-old fanboys telling me to F off because I might not like the CD I’m listening to, and state that I don’t know the first thing about music. They will have clearly missed the point of this experiment by a good country mile, and their comments may, or may not make it on here, depending on how amusingly off the mark they are.
As you can see by the strike-out, above, I’m no longer going to pick the Number 1 CD. That’s just too obvious. Instead, I’m going to use the chart on http://www.theofficialcharts.com and pick a number using random.org between 1 and 100.
Here are your random numbers:
19

Therefore, this weeks’ project shall be…
# TEDDY THOMPSON # A PIECE OF WHAT YOU NEED
Awesome. I’ve never actually heard of him, so this will be an interesting start to a possibly very cack-handed experiment. I’ll either order it tonight or pick it up from Asda or somehwere.
