Cool. I have one of the "gosget" GPSs (which you'll see if you search ebay for geotag) and it's about the size of a largish cigarette lighter. 2 AAA batteries last about 12 hours. The software they bundle is excellent (and free anyway)
and is called locr. http://www.locr.com/

You can also just use it to just log your track which you can then download (and overlay onto google earth etc) using any of the dozens of free software packages out there.

Funny you mention that! Me and chris were on about pedometers on the way home. I have found them to me incredibly inaccurate in the past (though the one I had was out of a bag of crisps, and I forciblty had to get it to work, eventually, it reported I'd taken 8 steps on a walk down the shops. I used the battery for something else.

I do, however, love your idea of a GPS system. Unfortunately, I rarely travel far enough to use it. Currently, when I do these walks, if I geotag them through flickr, I use a combination of Google Earth, memory and the (wholly innacurate) flickr map, and calculate the distance using Google maps alone.

I would LOVE a device I could carry in my pocket, record all of the GPS, then plug it in my computer, synchronise with Google Earth, and produce an accurate track of where I've been. Until then, I'll just have to do with my own judgement :)

Ever thought of getting a pedometer? Seeing as you seem to be walking around a lot these days...

Or, a a cheapish GPS from ebay (search for geotag) so that you could
tag all your photos with a GPS position?
