Scribbler’s Laid A Big Yule Log

Is it THAT time of the year already?

This blog has been following the ups and downs of my life since November 4th 2000. Amazingly, it's still going.

This is the best footy match I’ve ever seen.

77 minutes played Portugal v Holland, and is it 14 or 15 yellow cards so far?? It’s hilarious!

EDIT: 16 yellow cards, 4 sent off. That’s a world record, stats fans!

Oh, and just to prove I wasn’t lying…

Someone’s bound to moan that I failed the post-a-day thing…

Due to the intermittent service issues on the queeg.34sp.com server we will be bringing a replacement server online on Monday the 26th of June at approximately 5.30PM.

The queeg.34sp.com server hosts the following domain/s for you:

mercuryvapour.co.uk

The maintenance will involve the migration of the present server disks to a replacement machine. This will take 45-60 minutes to complete. During this time your site and email will be unreachable. Any email sent to your account during this time should be queued at the senders end; it should then be resent later when the server is back online.

Should the issues worsen before the planned time we will escalate the matter and perform the move on an emergency basis. Please refer to http://status.34sp.com should this be necessary.

If you have any queries please reply to this email.

So, it’s a server issue!!

Bohhhh.

Something which I didn’t take into consideration at the start of this experiment are long periods where I’m not at the machine, and server failures. I’ve had a mixture of the two. The machine this site is hosted on (queeg.34sp.com) is currently experiencing difficulties, probably down to… er something. It’s caused email and hosting to be desperately slow, and an un-backed-up post to disappear.

Closing down, pt. 2. Happy summer everyone!

Yes, today, is the first official full day of summer, depending whether you count June 21st as the end of spring, or the beginning of summer.

Anyway, that’s not relevant, as there’s something else that’s appeared to have closed. Yes, that is, the seafood shop on Raby Road. And I’m pretty upset about it.

So, after you’ve picked yourself up off the floor after reading that previous sentence, I’ll now explain my reasoning.

Now, everyone reading this will know my utter, utter hatred of any type of edible creature that comes from the plentiful oceans surrounding these great British Isles. However, my mother loved the stuff. There’d not be a week go by without some horrid type of seafood being cooked and eaten, most of it bought from this very shop

My hatred of fish meant that I couldn’t actually step foot inside a seafood shop (from hear on in referred to as a fish shop, not to be confused with a fish and chip shop, which I find myself in all too often). Except for this one.

For whatever reason, it didn’t actually smell like a fish shop. Most shops unsurprisingly smelt like… um, fish. But this one smelt odd. It smelt a bit like paint and floor polish. A peculair smell, but one I’ll always remember, which is strange, as I’ve not stepped foot inside it for over half of my life.

I remember the women behind the counter being really friendly, and the door alarm bell not actually being a proper bell, due to the fact the batteries were knackered. It just made a buzzing noise instead of ringing the bell. But then one week, they actually fixed the bell. And um, that’s all I remember.

My hatred of fish isn’t as strange as people might think. It’s actually genetic. Apparently, you learn to “like” vegetables as you grow up, but a liking for meat and fish is purely genetic.

So, the time I was force-fed a winkle by my parents when I was six, followed by me projectile vomiting across the living room suddenly makes sense. God, I’ll always remember that. It’s strange that all of these years later, that partiular incident still comes up in conversation occasionally.

Makes me wonder what would happen if I accidentally ordered a prawn curry from somewhere. I have a proper feeling that my head might just about explode. Or my stomach.

Closing down, pt. 1

No, I’m not closing down, but another one of the old internet establishments are closing their doors.

Fotango are going.

You may remember the name from the very very early days of this blog, approximately 5 years ago.. They were a photo developing / hosting type comany, rather like a primitive version of Photobucket or something like that. But there was a twist.

This was back in 2000. Digital cameras simply didn’t exist in any real way. The cost of the units was huge. So, you used to be able to deliver your actual camera films to be delivered to them, free of charge. They would provide you with an envelope to place your used film into, and you’d return it back to them. Once they’d developed it, you’d receive your film back, plus an index shot of what they’ve developed. It was great. The only catrch was, that if you wanted paper copies of said images, you paid through the nose for them, something like 50p a go. You couldn’t download full resolution of your images, just mid-sized JPEG thumbnails. They kept the original larger images on their server.

But when, back in early 2001, I bought a digital camera from Coatesy, my APS camera got shoved to the back of my drawer, and I never really used Fotango again.

Flash forward 6 years, I was at work, pissing about with my blogs, and I came across a post which mentioned them. I wondered if, after all of this time, Fotango still had my images on their server. I somehow remembered my login details, and watched in delight as the images came up. I’d not seen the images in 6 years. It was a bit of a shock, as a number of the people in some of the photos have passed away.

That waws a couple of months ago. On the way to work today, my dad mentioned that Fotango were closing the photo service. I have until 14th July to find out what they’re doing….

“Photos.Fotango is closing and will no longer be available from 14th July 2006

Photos.Fotango is closing down. The good news is that we’ve teamed up with our friends at PhotoBox to enable you to continue enjoying your photos long after Photos.Fotango has closed. We hope this is not too inconvenient and we’re sure that you will enjoy the award winning photo sharing and print service provided by PhotoBox. You will also continue to benefit from free sharing and storage space to store all of your photos.

As a welcome, if you save your photos with PhotoBox you will get 30 FREE 7×5 prints.

You will shortly receive an email with details of how you can transfer your account to PhotoBox and take up this great offer.”

Well, he was right. So, I have 3 weeks to decide what to do. Do I order the pics at an extortionate price (they’ve not changed much), or do I wait until they switch over to Photobox, which I already use? Photobox’s prices are a lot cheaper, but how do I know they’ll transfer my photos over correctly? If at all?

Oh, it’s all very complicated. I might just end up ordering the lot, and pay the extortionate price.

EDIT: No sooner had I clicked “Submit”, I went over to Fotango, and ordered them. Both rolls. It came to £19.00.
